CHEERS Hoops and Hopes
The CHEERS Hoops and Hopes Basketball and Mentorship program is a summer season initiative that focuses on basketball skill development, mentorship, interpersonal development, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, physical and mental wellness and black excellence. This 8 week program facilitates black youth in care between the ages of 12-20 through their interest in basketball. Over the course of the program, campers would meet with different industry professionals seeking to mentor them on developing key skills such as (conflict resolution, money management, applying for scholarships and mental health). The program culminates with a Basketball skills exhibition where campers would showcase the progress they have made over the Summer Holiday.
CHEERS Roots and Culture
The CHEERS Routes and Culture Program focuses on Caribbean cultural arts, specifically in costume design, production and staging. This program focuses primarily on youth age 12-18 and will focus on introductory project engagement skills like teamwork, responsibility, self discipline and an introduction to money management. Youth will learn about design, costume building, textiles, fabrics and the cultural tradition of making mas from Trinidad and Tobago. A lead artist along with two program assistants have been engaged to provide 10 skill training workshops. Additionally CHEERS Mentors will be engaged to provide cultural knowledge, skill development and on-site support for youth participants.
